Sexual Health Plan (SHP)

Summary: A healthy sexuality plan is a written document that describes:

  1. The behaviors the patient wants to change
  2. The high-risk behaviors
  3. Behaviors that are supportive for sexual health (for example, physical exercise or relaxation techniques). General lifestyle modifications, such as a balance between work and recreation, should also be considered.[1]

A Sexual Health Plan is described in Treating Out of Control Sexual Behavior: Rethinking Sex Addiction Book by Douglas Braun-Harvey and Michael A. Vigorito, p. 261 and onwards:

"For people familiar with 12-step sexual recovery programs, the Three Circle plan is similar to the SHP; both are tools used to identify and organize behavior health change (Sex Addicts Anonymous [SAA], n.d.). There are significant differences in goals and implementation of an SHP and a 12-step fellowship circle plan. The goal of the OCSB SHP plan is to define and maintain a personal vision for sexual health, not to abstain from specific sexual behaviors to achieve a form of sexual sobriety."

The Boundaries column is a list of rules the client is ready to accept, e.g. I will not watch porn.

The Ambivalence column are things that the client is not yet sure he is ready to change, but he is ready to monitor them, and decide in the future whether to move them to the Boundaries column. E.g. I will monitor my masturbation frequency for the next 30 days and then decide if I want to stop or reduce it.

The Health column is for actions that the client can take. E.g. I will install a filter.
